Introduction
Not all jewellery is created equal. Some pieces are designed for the moment, while others are made to last a lifetime and beyond.
Heirloom-quality jewellery isn't just about the memories it holds. It's about enduring design, precious materials, and skilled craftsmanship - pieces created to be worn, loved, and passed on without losing their beauty or integrity.
While any piece can become an heirloom if it holds sentimental value, heirloom-quality jewellery is built with longevity in mind. These are the jewels that will still sparkle in fifty years' time, with settings that remain secure and details that never date.
Whether you're searching for an engagement ring, a meaningful gift, or a jewel to mark a milestone, knowing what to look for ensures your piece will be cherished today - and for generations to come.
so, What Makes Jewellery Truly Heirloom-Quality?
Timeless Design That Lasts
The best heirlooms are those future generations will love just as much as you do. Choosing a timeless design ensures your jewellery never goes out of style. But how do you know what's truly timeless?
- Choose a classic silhouette. Solitaire rings, three-stone rings, signets, eternity bands, elegant pendants, riviere necklaces, studs, and line bracelets never go out of style. They're refined, versatile, and endlessly wearable.
- Look for thoughtful details. Intricate millegrain edges, sculpted settings, or delicate engraving add character without dating the piece.
- Think beyond trends. Opt for balanced, well-proportioned designs with harmonious elements. If you're incorporating gemstones, choose colours that complement each other beautifully.
- Take inspiration from the past. Some design styles have endured for centuries. Styles like the bold geometry of Art Deco, the romantic charm of Georgian jewellery, and the vibrant colours of Elizabethan jewels continue to inspire-and lend a natural heirloom quality to a modern piece.
- Choose what you truly love. The most timeless pieces are often those you connect with emotionally - whether it's a shape, a colour, a style, or a particular detail that resonates with you. When a piece feels deeply personal, it's far more likely to be worn, cherished, and passed on with pride.
Exceptional Craftsmanship & Construction
True heirloom jewellery isn't mass-produced. It's created with time, care and skill.
- Expert hands at every stage. From initial sketches to making the mount and setting stones, each step should be handled by specialists with years of experience. The difference often lies in the details: look at the back, sides, or settings of a piece, and you'll start to see the care that's gone into it. A great sign of a beautifully made piece of jewellery is that it's almost as beautiful from the back or side as it is from the front.
- Substantial, well-made jewels last. Handmade, small-batch, or one-of-a-kind pieces often feel more solid than mass-market jewellery. Mass-produced designs frequently use flimsy settings, shared claws, or ultra-fine metal to reduce weight and cost - making them more prone to breakage and lost stones. While even heirloom jewellery needs the occasional repair, investing in well-made pieces often saves you money in the long run.
The Right Materials: Gemstones & Metals That Endure
Using durable, high-quality materials is key to heirloom jewellery.
- Natural gemstones. We use only natural, responsibly sourced gemstones at Aril Jewels, selected by hand for their beauty, durability and charm. I (Chloë) personally select each one for its quality, colour and cut, balancing beauty with wearability.
- Antique diamonds with character. For something truly unique, antique diamonds like Old Mine or Old European cuts offer a softer, romantic sparkle and individual character. Each was cut by hand, making it one-of-a-kind - ideal for a future heirloom.
- Precious metals with longevity. We favour 18ct gold and platinum for their strength and lasting beauty. Platinum is naturally white and highly durable, while 18ct gold has a rich colour and excellent resistance to everyday wear. These metals have been valued for centuries and continue to hold their value.
- Check for a hallmark. In the UK, precious metals above a certain weight must be hallmarked by an independent Assay Office (we use the London Assay Office). At Aril Jewels, we also proudly include the "Created in the UK" mark - a sign of authentic British craftsmanship.
Stone Settings That Protect & Preserve
If your piece includes gemstones, the right setting is essential for long-term durability.
- Precision matters. In a high-quality piece, each setting is made specifically for its gemstone. Stones should sit securely, with no rattling or gaps.
- Comfort counts. Your heirloom jewel should feel smooth and comfortable, with no sharp edges or rough claws to snag.
- Everyday wear? Choose wisely. Some settings are better suited to frequent wear:
- Rubover and flush settings fully encase the edges of a gem and offer excellent protection making them ideal for everyday wear. To give them a slightly more refined or delicate look, millegrain detailing applied by hand adds a timeless vintage and feminine touch.
Rose-cut diamond eternity ring with rose-cut diamonds set in 18k yellow gold rubover settings - Cut-down settings, often seen in Georgian jewellery, combine elegance with durability. Like in a rubover setting, metal encompasses the edge of the stone but some metal is cut away or "down" to give the illusion of claws. This is also done by hand and can be labour intensive but is a beautiful and unique setting style.

The Bespoke Experience: Creating a Personal Heirloom
For something truly one-of-a-kind, a bespoke design allows you to create a piece with lasting meaning-one that reflects your story and personal style.
At Aril Jewels, bespoke design is at the heart of what we do. For Kayla and me, it's one of the most rewarding parts of our work-helping clients bring their ideas to life and create jewellery they'll one day pass down.
One of our favourite commissions was for a lovely couple, Jim and Alison, who wanted to design a pendant in celebration of their new baby granddaughter. We created a delphinium-inspired piece-her birth flower-set with vivid cornflower-blue sapphires and exceptionally rare natural blue diamonds, all in platinum. A jewel woven with meaning, memory, and beauty for her to treasure as she grows.
Whether inspired by one of our collections, a family heirloom, or a moment worth celebrating, our bespoke jewels are designed with heirloom quality in mind-from the first sketch to the final polish.
Caring for Your Heirloom Jewellery
Even the most durable pieces benefit from a little care. Here's how to keep yours looking its best:
- Regular check-ups. We recommend having your jewellery professionally checked every couple of years-and annually for claw-set rings.
- Careful wear. Rings often get the hardest wear so try to remove them before gardening, weightlifting, or anything rough on the hands.
- Avoid harsh chemicals. Chlorine, perfumes, saltwater, and cleaning products can damage metal and stones. Apply perfume before putting on your jewellery and avoid swimming with it on.
- Gentle cleaning. A soft toothbrush and mild washing-up liquid work wonders. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless advised.
- Get the right fit. A loose ring can easily slip off in cold weather. Aim for a snug, comfortable fit.
- Store safely. Use a soft pouch or separate compartment in your jewellery box to prevent scratches. Our handmade Aril Jewels leather boxes are perfect to store your pieces in to keep them safe.
