The Art of Collecting Fine Jewellery: Building a Meaningful Collection

April 17, 2025

Jewellery isn't just something you wear - it's something you live in. A tiny treasure that holds a moment in time, a memory, or a feeling. That's why collecting fine jewellery is so much more than building a box of pretty things. It's about creating a personal archive of stories, symbols, and sentiments - pieces that speak to you now, and that you'll love for years (and generations) to come.

It can also be a thoughtful investment in yourself. Collecting fine jewellery means choosing designs made to last - emotionally and materially. A meaningful collection brings joy over decades, growing with you as your story unfolds.

And while it's first and foremost about meaning, fine jewellery can also be a lasting store of value. Timeless design, rare gemstones, and exceptional craftsmanship often retain their appeal and can hold or even grow in value over time - particularly when pieces are thoughtfully chosen and cared for. That said, jewellery is rarely a short-term investment. Its true worth tends to unfold slowly, becoming more meaningful and more treasured with time. In that sense, building a collection becomes a quiet kind of legacy.

Where to Start: Choosing a Theme

There's no single way to begin. Some collectors fall for a particular style or shape, others are drawn to meaning, colour, or historical references. You don't need a specific theme for your collection to feel cohesive. If each piece means something to you, that connection becomes your thread.

Don't worry if you're not sure where to begin - many collectors start with a single piece that simply speaks to them.

Here are a few ways to help define your collecting focus:

  1. Era-Inspired Styles
Design eras can be a wonderful source of inspiration. If you love bold geometry and clean lines, you might be drawn to the Art Deco elegance of our Clara Collection. Prefer hidden meaning and delicate, whimsical details? The Georgiana Collection offers a trove of celestial motifs and delicate silhouettes. For rich colours and a bold, floral twist inspired by English gardens and Elizabethan symbolism, the Elizabeth Collection brings a regal elegance to modern heirlooms. Often, these styles overlap or evolve - your collection can reflect a mix of influences that feel uniquely personal.
  2. Style Motifs
Collect around themes you're naturally drawn to like floral designs, celestial motifs, or sculptural settings. These create cohesion in your collection without feeling too planned.
  3. Symbolism & Sentiment
Jewellery has always carried hidden messages. Love tokens, lucky charms, birthstones, meaningful engraving, or even acrostic jewellery that spells out secret words in gemstones - these are deeply personal ways to begin a collection. Some collectors incorporate heirloom gemstones passed down through generations, resetting them into new designs that continue the story.
  4. Favourite Gemstones or Colours
You might be instinctively drawn to a particular hue - the soft cornflower blue of a sapphire, the striking green of a peridot, or the unique violet-blue of tanzanite. Choosing a signature gemstone or colour palette can give your collection a strong visual identity. This approach also allows you to explore different cuts and settings while staying true to a look that feels distinctly yours.

Understanding Value

Fine jewellery is about more than sparkle. It's worth considering the craftsmanship and design details that make a piece truly special.

Craftsmanship Counts
Handmade jewellery that's well-made, created with care and expertise, holds its value far more than trend-led designs. Look for thoughtful details like hand-applied millegrain, a beautifully finished back, or perfectly balanced proportions - all hallmarks of quality.

Gemstone Quality & Rarity
Some collectors choose to focus on rare gemstones or unique cuts. Natural gemstones, especially those that are unheated or untreated, are prized for their rarity. Choosing responsibly sourced natural stones is not only a mark of quality but also a meaningful way to invest in your jewellery. For a true collectors' piece look for exceptionally rare gemstones like natural-coloured diamonds, Paraiba tourmalines, alexandrites, unheated sapphires or rubies, or exceptionally clear emeralds.

Our co-founder Chloë Woodmansterne is a qualified gemmologist and diamond grader, and we work closely with trusted suppliers to source exceptional gemstones for every Aril Jewels piece.

Some Inspiration from Our Own Collections

Jewellery often marks the milestones that shape us. Our co-founder Kayla designed a bespoke ring featuring a lavender-grey spinel and rare colour-changing alexandrites (her birthstone and favourite gem) to celebrate freezing her eggs. It's engraved with "This spark will grow," inspired by a historic ring in the V&A Museum, where we often find design inspiration. She wears it daily as a reminder of strength and hope.

Chloë created a Georgian-inspired, old-cut diamond and star sapphire ring using a star sapphire from her late grandmother's wedding ring for her 30th birthday - one of the first heirloom jewels she ever reimagined for herself. She also wears a rainbow moonstone and diamond ring every day, originally given to her mum for her parents' 20th anniversary, engraved with their names and anniversary date.

We wear these personal pieces alongside our collection pieces, reminding us that jewels don't need to be saved for special occasions - they become special when worn often and with love.

Building a Jewellery Wardrobe

A thoughtful mix of everyday staples and statement pieces forms the foundation of a truly wearable - and collectable - jewellery wardrobe.

Everyday Jewellery

  • Stud Earrings - Understated yet refined. Choose diamonds, coloured gemstones, or something with a vintage-inspired twist. Many people wear their favourite studs daily-they become part of your signature style.
  • Everyday Rings - Choose rings that are meaningful and durable enough to wear every day. Whether it's a gemstone ring or a design that celebrates a milestone, the right piece will become part of your rhythm.
  • The Signet Ring - A classic that can be made personal through meaningful engravings, monograms, or hidden messages.
  • Versatile Pendant - Effortless, elegant, and meaningful. A pendant is often the most worn jewel in a collection - especially if it's tied to a memory or message.
  • Bracelet Stack - Collect bracelets you can layer: slim chains, gemstone details, or pieces with subtle engraving or a hidden message.
  • Chain Necklace - Ideal for layering or wearing alone when a pendant doesn't suit the neckline. Our acrostic necklaces are a beautiful way to wear a hidden message close to your heart.

Statement Pieces

  • Cocktail Ring - A bold ring - whether it's one of our stunning Rose rings or a single striking gemstone - can become the heart of your collection. Try styling with minimal jewellery elsewhere to let it shine.
  • Drop Earrings - Elegant and eye-catching. A pair of vintage-inspired or gem-set drops can elevate even the simplest outfit. Style with an updo or sleek hair to show them off.
  • Convertible Jewels - Pieces that transform - like earrings that become pendants, or a tiara that converts into a necklace - add versatility and intrigue to a collection. They also lend themselves well to day-to-evening transitions.

Preserving Your Collection

Once you've started curating your own capsule of treasures, it's worth protecting it properly:

Store with Care
Soft-lined boxes, individual pouches, or compartmental trays can prevent scratches and tangles. If in doubt, our handmade leather Aril Jewels boxes are designed with both presentation and protection in mind.

Insurance & Appraisal
If your collection grows, it may be worth getting select pieces insured. Keep original invoices, certificates, and any bespoke documentation safe - these can all help with valuations in future. For antique or bespoke jewels, we recommend using a valuer with specialist experience in fine jewellery to ensure an accurate assessment. Jewellery should be reappraised every few years to keep up with market changes. You can search for valuers through the Institute of Registered Valuers or ask your jeweller for a recommendation.
